The Atom editor is not only cross platform (meaning it works in both Windows, MacOS and Linux) but – like WordPress – also completely open source. While many of the features are fairly common among code editors, it is important to point them out so beginners understand what they are and how they will help with coding and web development. The Benefits of Using the Atom Code Editorįrom here on out we will look at what’s to love about Atom. So far so easy, right? Now let’s look at some of the features that make the Atom code editor stand out. When you choose Add project folder from the File menu, Atom will provide the file structure on the left side. You can create projects, files and folders or edit existing files. This is where you will do most of your work. You can close all these tabs to get to the main editor screen. There is also a tab in which you are asked whether to send anonymous data to Atom’s makers in order to improve the software. Once the installation is done, you are met with a welcome screen that will help you take your first steps around the code editor such as create a new project, learn keyboard shortcuts and other options. Seriously, the installation doesn’t even give you a prompt to decide where to place the files. Just click the big red button.Īfter the download is finished, double click on the installation file. 2 The Benefits of Using the Atom Code EditorĪtom can be downloaded for free from the official website. In this article we are starting off with Atom, a popular cross-platform and open-source code editor. For those still wondering, “which code editor is the right one for me?” We want to help you find your own answer by taking a closer look at some of the best code editors out there. However, there are many available options, as we showed in a popular article from 2015, The 11 Best Code Editors Available. In this case, that is usually a code editor or IDE (Integrated Development Environment). Of course, just like every other task, writing and modifying code gets infinitely easier with the right tool. There’s virtually nothing that can’t be done and many WordPress users sooner or later go down this path. But even powerful themes (like Elegant Themes’ own Divi) can be greatly extended with a working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and/or PHP. Plugins, page builders and themes enable even non-technical users to create almost any kind of website. If I didn't have one and was looking for an editor right now, it would be really close.WordPress allows for loads of customizations out of the box. I already have a Sublime license, though. I decided to stick with Sublime for now just for the font rendering and the better performance. In Sublime, you have to edit JSON formatted files. Changing settings is a lot easier in atom.io.atom.io GitHub integration is perfect (not really a surprise because it was created by the GitHub folks).Sublime has better performance when opening files, scrolling, etc.I found that font rendering on a Retina screen is better in Sublime. So, which is better - Sublime or atom.io? The barrier in Sublime is a little higher because it is written in C++/Python and packages are in Python as well. If you know web technologies, you can author a package. I expect that atom.io will soon surpass Sublime in terms of number and quality of packages. OK, now I just need to edit my personal stylesheet (Atom->Open Your Stylesheet): I pull up Dev tools (View->Developer->Toggle Developer Tools), and select the element in dev tools: Let's say I want to change the font of the directory tree on the left (definitely needs to be 20px Arial). You can even pull up a developer console just like you would in Chrome. So, why not give atom.io a try? What's really cool about atom.io is that it is written in js/html/css and runs on Chrome/node.js. I heard about atom.io a while ago and just saw it mentioned again when I researched a plugin for Sublime. There are tons of packages for Sublime that let you add pretty much any feature you can think of - git integration, linting, prettifying code, etc. Sublime is an extremely powerful and extensible editor. ![]() I have been using Sublime Text 3 on Mac for meteor and node development for a while now. 2 min read Photo by Ilya Pavlov / Unsplash. ![]()
